SsangYong History

Founded in 1954, SsangYong Motor Company has been manufacturing automobiles for more than five decades. SsangYong Motors began its business as a manufacturer of commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, and special purpose vehicles including mixers and fire-fighting trucks.

The corporate name, SsangYong, dates back to 1986, when the SsangYong Group acquisitioned Keohwa Motors which specialized in manufacturing jeeps, it then launched a full-scale investment program in automobile manufacturing. In 1991, Mercedes-Benz AG assisted SsangYong Motors to improve manufacturing quality of its vehicles. Under this new union SsangYong was able to extend its businesses to light commercial vehicles ('91), diesel engines ('91), passenger cars ('93) and petrol engines ('93).

Since then, SsangYong Motors established it presence in three major sectors of the automobile market with its sports utility vehicles, recreational vehicles and passenger cars and has established its reputation for innovation, leadership and quality.

In 1997 Ssangyong merged with Daewoo Motors for a number of years. When Daewoo Motors was acquired by General Motors, the world's largest car manufacturer, Ssangyong began its own development as a separate brand with the launch of the Rexton in 2002. It enhanced design and R&D capabilities, rebuilt global sales networks and revamped aftersales service programs.

At present, SsangYong Motor Company is working to establish strategic alliances with overseas business partners to make inroads into more international markets. With new capital investment, SsangYong will make continuous effort to upgrade the existing products and developing new products.
